Olya Bakina
MD, PhD
I am a resident physician in Ophthalmology at Charité, as well as a PhD graduate from Max-Delbrück Center of Molecular Medicine in Berlin, Germany. Bridging fundamental research and clinical practice in Ophthalmology is my passion.
Prior to diving into science, I completed my MD degree and medical residency training in Ukraine, and obtained MS in Biomedical sciences in the Unites States.
My PhD project in the group of Prof. Helmut Kettenmann adapts cutting-edge technologies to analysis of the satellite microglia, which form tight contacts with neuronal cell bodies. For this we employed a combination of electrophysiology, microscopy and scRNA-seq methods to study different populations of microglia.
Additionally, in collaboration with the Thomas Conrad and Jan Philipp Junker groups, I optimised and developed scRNA-seq methods, such as Patch-seq and SLAM-seq.
With a medical background, I am interested to study cell type specific changes during disease development, with the focus on retinal degenerations.
